One of the most ancient methods of spiritual and angelic evocation is through candle rituals. There are many different uses for these. To work in this way you must select a candle, charge it, then light it so that the energy of your intention (your spell) seeps into the ether where it slowly builds and manifests itself.
The word spell (in spiritual circles we know this as a positive intention) derives from the action of dedicating a ‘spell of time’ in which to undertake a ritual. Your intention comprises a set of words that may be chanted, spoken, sung, thought about or merely written down. The words of your intention should ask that a specific change take place for the benefit of the recipient. It is important that you get these words right before you begin your candle ritual. Be sure to avoid any words or phrases that could have an ambiguous meaning.
It is my belief that it is best to have the permission of the recipient of any intention before you start. This is to ensure that they really do want the change to happen and they can also add their energy to the rite, even from a distance. Never assume that another person wants something as much as you do.
For instance, you may want to attract someone you like to love you back but this may be unethical. You cannot assume that the object of your affection wants the same thing as you. S/he may already be committed to someone else or, even if s/he is available, s/he may not want a relationship with anyone. You could, however, have a general intention asking that you meet someone special who will respect you and give you the romantic and unconditional love that you desire.
Care should also be taken when undertaking healing rituals. Healing is not the same as curing! It may be more appropriate to ask for the healing an individual NEEDS rather than the healing that they WANT and, again, I believe that it is best to have their permission first.
When you begin to practise candle rituals you should set out a specific place in which to work, your sacred space. You will need a surface on which you can burn your candles safely and where you will be able to work quietly without distraction. It is advisable to keep special candleholders to use specifically for your candle rituals.
Candle rituals can be done at any time; you will instinctively know when you are at your best and able to work efficiently. Having employed good psychic protection and ensured that your aura is cleansed and strong you are then ready to call upon the universal energies available to help you.
Monday is the ideal day to harness lunar energy so it is a good day for growth, fertility (both male and female), motherhood, divination and other psychic pursuits.
Tuesday is an excellent day for dealing with matters of conflict, competition and finance.
Wednesday is the perfect day for issues of communication, artistic pursuits, creativity and wisdom, to help with addictive behaviour and for psychological problems.
Thursday is the best day for issues of health, business, wealth and personal expansion.
Friday is an excellent day for spells of love, women’s issues, faithfulness and loyalty.
Saturday is the day on which to extend your horizons and look to the future.
Sunday is the best day to deal with issues to do with authority, prosperity, money and power, health and vitality.
The ideal candles for you to use during these rituals are t-lites, small votives or thin tapered candles. If the candle is too fat it will not burn away evenly and there will be wax residue; these rituals are most effective when the flame consumes the candle easily.
When undertaking candle rituals remember that a burning candle should never be left unattended and should be well out of the way of children, pets and draughts that may knock the candle over. Also, make sure that the surfaces on which you place your candles are suitable for candle burning – the ends of candles get very hot and may start a fire. Position your candles away from all flammable materials.
Before you begin your ritual choose a candle suitable for the intention you have in mind and decide on the day that will have the best energy to enhance your intention. You should then visualise how you desire things to be after your have completed your ritual. For instance, if you are casting a spell to bring money into your home you should picture yourself being handed a substantial amount of cash; to attract wealth you could burn a purple candle on a Sunday.
When casting the spell you should make sure that you have no distractions, that your sacred space is prepared, and that you are psychically protected and say an affirmation to open the sacred circle. Once the spell has been cast you should snuff out the candles, in the order in which you lit them, and thank the powers that have worked with you in your magyck spell casting. To bring the ritual to a close you should say an affirmation asking for the powers and energies that have been unused during the spell cast to be returned to the Universal energy bank and that your work be completed and the sacred circle be closed.
Once lit the candle can be allowed to burn away or the same candle can be relit over the period of several days – each time it is relit the intention should be repeated to focus on the spell. A candle that is used for spell casting should never be extinguished by blowing it out (you will blow away the spell) – it should be snuffed. A candle should be used for one spell only. If you have more than one spell to cast you must choose a candle for each specific purpose.
Let us look at the meanings of the colours and some of the intentions that you could use for candle magick. If you have a specific purpose in mind but cannot find a candle to match the colour vibration you require you can use a white candle – because it contains all the colours in the visible spectrum – or you can place a white candle inside a large glass jar which has been painted on the outside with special glass paint or covered with translucent cellophane to create the right shade. If you use either of these methods be sure to check that they are fireproof and do not present a fire hazard to yourself and your home.
GOLD – this colour candle attracts all positive influences and higher spiritual beings. It improves ones’ social status, employment and career matters.
HEALING – inflammation; period pains; menstrual irregularities; stress related illnesses.
WHITE – this colour is the colour of Spirituality and is used for promoting peaceful thoughts; for contacting spirit guides or ones’ guardian angel; for sincerity and to get to the truth of matters and for cleansing and purifying.
White candles can be used for any purpose or intention, especially when a coloured one is not available. Use also for emergency situations or seemingly impossible situations.
HEALING – use for all healing purposes
PURPLE– this is the colour of highly developed psychic powers and spirituality. It is also the colour of financial success. It attracts money and luck in financial speculations and helps in legal matters.
HEALING – lung problems; drug/alcohol addiction.
BLUE OR SILVER – use for occult wisdom and psychism. Helps to maintain psychic awareness. Good for all domestic matters and any travel taken by water. Use a blue candle for peace and harmony, healing – especially to calm nerves, and to restore friendships and happiness. An indigo or a turquoise candle can be used to bock the negative energy caused by gossip, lies, deceit and to neutralise magick initiated by another spell caster. Cypress or jasmine oil will enhance the power of a blue candle.
MAGENTA – this colour can be used for magick asking for rapid change to take place, for spiritual healing and it can be used for exorcism and banishing troublesome energies. When used for exorcism or banishing it can be anointed with frankincense oil.
HEALING – works on a high vibrational energy.
GREEN – this is the colour of fertility, abundance, good luck and harmony. It attracts love, romance and friendship. It is good for the environment, gardening, music, art and fashion. It attracts generosity, success and is excellent for healing – particularly women’s problems. Patchouli oil can be used to enhance the power of a green candle.
HEALING – calming; lowers high blood pressure, aids circulation.
YELLOW – this is the colour of the intellect/mind. This colour is good for creative imagination, communication and memory. Helps with exams, in education, writing, computers & the Internet, business & commerce, finding lost property & stolen goods, for safety on short trips, land & air travel and any concerns around young people.
RED – this is the colour of energy, strength, courage, physical protection & sexual virility. Use for any mechanical things, craftsmanship and to protect from fire and violence.
HEALING – lack of energy; impotency; lack of vitality.
BLACK – this colour rules over karma and the passing of time; property, land & agriculture; the elderly and terminally ill and should be used with care. Use black candles for positive reasons in issues involving discord and strife and for binding negative forces. Never be tempted to cast a spell that asks for retribution or revenge and remember that when you have rid something it leaves a gap that needs filling – fill that gap with light and with love. A black candle anointed with a little cypress oil increases its positive power.
HEALING – for anyone with a terminal illness.
A few final words on magic and spell casting – nothing is guaranteed; spells may take hours, days, weeks, months or years to work; remember that “what is sent out is sent back” and be careful how you cast your spells or ask your petitions. An old occult adage states that “all energy is in thought” so, when working, keep your thoughts pure. If it doesn’t ‘feel’ right then it probably isn’t!
